‘Prometheus’ Isn’t An ‘Alien’ Prequel, Swears Fox Studio Chief

Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” is one of the hottest projects to keep an eye on in 2012, no doubt about it. TV Bits: Josh Lucas and Tricia Helfer in ?The Firm? Trailers; Premiere Dates for ?Eastbound & Down?, ?Life?s Too Short?, and ?Luck?; ?Pan Am? Not Cancelled

[1]

Today’s TV Bits offers a few things to look forward to in the not-too-distant future, including imperiled lawyers, asshole baseball players, pretty flight attendants, and a touch of dry British humor. After the jump:

NBC drops two teasers for its legal thriller The Firm
HBO announces premiere dates for Eastbound & Down and Life’s Too Short
ABC confirms that Pan Am is not cancelled

Let’s kick things off with two teasers for NBC’s The Firm. Josh Lucas stars as lawyer Mitch McDeere, who must fight for his life when he uncovers a criminal conspiracy involving a shady legal firm led by Tricia Helfer. If that sounds weirdly familiar, that’s because it’s a sequel of sorts to the 1993 thriller The Firm, which starred Tom Cruise as McDeere.

The new series picks up ten years after the events of the first film, as McDeere and his family come out of hiding after spending a decade Witness Protection Program — only to find that, as McDeere puts it in the trailer, “it’s happening again.” C’mon, Mitch! Did you seriously think the mob would just forgive and forget so quickly?

Also starring Molly Parker, Callum Keith Rennie, and Juliette Lewis, The Firm bows Sunday, January 8 at 9/8c on NBC. [via The Playlist [2]]

Bored to Death ended its third season this week, and Boardwalk Empire’s Season 2 finale is less than two weeks away, but TV lovers needn’t let their HBO subscriptions go to waste between December and April’s Game of Thrones premiere. The network has just announced early 2012 premiere dates for returning favorite Eastbound & Down, as well as highly anticipated newcomers Life’s Too Short and Luck.

We’ve already reported that Luck, the new horse-racing drama by Deadwood creator David Milch, will sneak in a bit early with a preview showing of the first episode following the Boardwalk Empire finale on December 11. Now we also know that the proper start to the season will hit January 29. Michael Mann directs the pilot, which stars Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte.

Comedy fans, meanwhile, will get their moment on February 19, which will see the start of the third and final season of the Danny McBride-starring baseball comedy Eastbound & Down. Also premiering that day is Life’s Too Short, which stars Harry Potter actor and little person Warwick Davis as a fictionalized version of himself trying to get his career back on track. The six-episode series comes from Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, and will guest star Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Liam Neeson among others. Watch a clip from the show, which has already debuted in the U.K., below.

It may seem weird for us to go out of our way to inform you that a show has not been cancelled, but in the case of ABC’s Pan Am there’s apparently been some confusion. Earlier this week, star Karine Vanasse tweeted [4] “Well, we received THE call, #PanAm is only coming back for one more episode after Christmas. But up to the end, we’ll give it our all!” Fans naturally assumed that spelled the end for the retro airline drama, which got off to a decent start in the ratings with its pilot but has been pulling disappointing numbers ever since.

However, ABC quickly clarified that the show had not been cancelled, and that it wouldn’t decide until May whether it wants to renew Pan Am for a second season. The series will shoot and air a total of 14 episodes this season, including the 13 full episodes it was originally slated for and one of the five additional scripts the network ordered later on. The other four episodes will probably not shoot this season, according to a source at ABC.

For her part, Vanasse corrected her earlier statement, tweeting [5] “Sorry for the confusion #PanAm fans; there are still 5 new episodes to air until February :) ” After that point, freshman series GCB will be filling Pan Am’s Sundays 10 PM timeslot, with a premiere scheduled for Sunday, March 4. Helena Bonham Carter: ‘Dark Shadows’ Will Be ‘Impossible To Sell’

Helena Bonham Carter might have loved her role in Tim Burton’s upcoming film “Dark Shadows,” but she was incredibly frank about the project when MTV News caught up with her before last night’s Britannia Awards.

National Board of Review Calls ?Hugo? Best Film of 2011

And just like that, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo became an Oscar contender. While I like the movie a good bit [1], primarily for very specific elements, I didn’t really expect to see Hugo turning into something that would be an awards-season player. But the National Board of Review disagrees, and today the board named Hugo the best film of 2011 and Martin Scorsese best director. Check out the NBR’s full evaluation of 2011 below.

Board president Annie Schulhof said in a statement,
Hugo is such a personal film by Martin Scorsese. It is a tribute to the early years of cinema that uses today?s cutting-edge technology to bring the audience into a completely unique and magical world. It is visually stunning and emotionally engaging.
I’m pretty surprised to see Margin Call director J.C. Chandor get the nod for debut director. (I would have gone with Martha Marcy May Marlene’s Sean Durkin.) I’m very happy to see Christopher Plummer get the best supporting actor recognition. Sure, the Oscar campaign for Andy Serkis in that category is great, but Plummer was just devastating and wonderful in Beginners. Likewise, I’m happy to see some recognition for 13 Assassins. The ‘top independent films’ lineup is a bit suspect, however, just because I think the NBR’s definition of ‘independent’ is a bit more loose than mine.

And the NBR continues a love affair with Clint Eastwood, calling the thoroughly mediocre J. Edgar one of the year’s best.

Competition Films For The 2012 Sundance Film Festival Announced

Snow is falling, the temperature is dropping, movies are getting better. Some might say it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas but I say it’s beginning to look a lot like Sundance. The 2012 Sundance Film Festival announced its first batch of films Wednesday, all of which are in competition. Meaning these are the films eligible for awards. It also means that, as of right now, these are the films you probably haven’t heard of. But, at this time last year [1], the competition films included a ton that you’ve surely now heard of such as Another Earth, Circumstance, Like Crazy, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Pariah, The Guard, Tyrannosaur and Take Shelter. Those were just the narratives. In last year’s documentary competition, films like Beats, Rhymes and Life, Being Elmo, How to Die in Oregon, Page One, Knuckle, Project Nim and Senna all played.

New Release Dates for ?Red Dawn? Remake, Roland Emmerich?s ?Singularity?, Kathryn Bigelow?s Bin Laden Movie

[1]

As we head into Thanksgiving weekend and gear up to watch what feels like a dozen new releases this weekend, FilmDistrict and Sony have quietly announced new release dates for a few of their projects.

That long-delayed Red Dawn remake that FilmDistrict picked up earlier this fall [2] is now scheduled to drop next fall, while Sony’s Pixels and Singularity have both set dates for 2013. Meanwhile, we finally have a set date for that Kathryn Bigelow project about Osama bin Laden. More details after the jump.

FilmDistrict has announced an opening date of November 2, 2012 for Red Dawn, the Dan Bradley-directed remake of the 1984 war movie starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen. Bradley finished shooting the film way back in 2009 for an intended 2010 release, but MGM’s woes put the project on the shelf [3] until this September when FilmDistrict stepped in to distribute.

On the plus side, that extra time has given Red Dawn’s stars — which include a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth, a pre-Hunger Games Josh Hutcherson, and a pre-Wonder Woman Adrianne Palicki — a chance to raise their profiles, so the cast seems much more star-studded now than it did back when they first got together.

Over at Sony, Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi epic Singularity has been pushed back six months to November 1, 2013. The news comes as no surprise, seeing as the studio put the project on hold [4] earlier this month to allow Emmerich, co-writer Harald Kloser, and singularity expert Ray Kurzweil more time to develop the screenplay — although at the time, the studio insisted that Singularity was still on track to meet its spring release date.

Taking over Singularity’s old May 17, 2013 slot will be Pixels [5], an action comedy based on Patrick Jean’s video game short of the same title.

Finally, we’ve known for a while [6] that Bigelow’s untitled bin Laden thriller would be getting moved from October 12, 2012 to a new date after next year’s presidential election, and we now know exactly when it’ll hit. Sony has put the film at December 19, 2012 — safely after the November race, but early enough to compete in the 2012 Oscar race. Seems like smart planning, seeing as Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal’s last collaboration The Hurt Locker picked up six Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

?Newlyweds? Trailer ? That Girl from the Last Season of ?Scrubs? Ruins Edward Burns? Life

[1]

Edward Burns may be best known for his work in front of the camera, but over the past decade and half he’s made a dozen or so attempts at writing and directing as well. His latest project, the indie drama Newlyweds, stars Burns as a New Yorker quietly going about his life when he finds his life disrupted by the sudden arrival of his troubled little sister (Kerry Bishé). Sort of like Steve McQueen’s Shame or Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene, I guess, except not really at all.

Rounding out the cast are Caitlin Fitzgerald as Burns’ wife Katie, Marsha Dietlein as Katie’s sister Marsha, and Max Baker as Marsha’s husband. Watch the trailer after the jump.

[via First Showing [2]]

Newlyweds doesn’t look half bad — the premise of a just-married couple struggling to balance their old families with the new one they’ve created is a decent one, and there are a few scenes in the trailer that suggest we could be seeing some solid performances from the leads. Plus, I’m a sucker for movies that are actually shot in New York City, and I have a lingering affection for Bishé left over from the underrated last season of Scrubs.

On the other hand, there’s nothing about Newlyweds that suggests it’s any better than or different from every other indie relationship drama. And although Burns got off to a strong start with his directorial debut, 1995′s The Brothers McMullen, most of the projects he’s helmed since then haven’t been anything to get excited about. Unless Newlyweds winds up with unusually good reviews, I suspect I’ll wind up skipping it and then quickly forgetting it ever existed at all.

Newlyweds drops December 26, 2011.

Synopsis:
Buzzy (Edward Burns) and Katie (Caitlin Fitzgerald) are a newly married couple living a seemingly conflict-free life. But when Buzzy’s damaged and impulsive half-sister Linda (Kerry Bishe) arrives at their doorstep expecting to stay for an indefinite period in their Tribeca loft, her antics threaten to disrupt the couple’s commitment to an “easy” marriage. Meanwhile, with Katie’s sister Marsha projecting suspicions of her own husband’s infidelity onto Buzzy, will the couple’s formerly trusting and insulated life be able to withstand the dysfunctions of their respective siblings?

Poster For Angelina Jolie?s ?In the Land of Blood and Honey? is Bloody and Striking

In the Land of Blood and Honey is the directorial debut of Angelina Jolie, who also wrote the script about a pair of lovers, a Muslim and a Serb, whose relationship forms during the Bosnian War.

The poster has just been released, and it is an eye-catching image that bucks the trend of using headshots and/or overly composed, dry imagery to sell the war-torn romance. This was probably the only approach to take in order to sell the film in the US, given that the leads, Zana Marjanovi? and Goran Kostic, aren’t recognizable faces here. Bonus for us that we get a pretty good poster out of the deal. Check it out in full below.

Take a look at the trailer here [1].

Thanks to Yahoo [2] for the poster. In the Land of Blood and Honey will be distributed [3] in the US by FilmDistrict with a limited Oscar-qualifying run starting on December 23. And while the film was shot in both Bosanski/Hrvatski/Srpski and English languages, the US release [4] will be the Bosanski/Hrvatski/Srpski version with subtitles. Good call on FilmDistrict’s part, I think.
Danijel, a soldier fighting for the Serbs, and Ajla, a Bosnian held captive in the camp he oversees, knew each other before the war, and could have found love with each other. But as the armed conflict takes hold of their lives, their relationship grows darker, their motives and connection to one another ambiguous, their allegiances uncertain.

Gale Anne Hurd Producing ?Area 51? TV Show

Gale Anne Hurd, the producer who started her career with Roger Corman and whose resume includes The Terminator, Aliens, Armageddon and The Walking Dead, is going to Area 51. Hurd’s company, Valhalla Entertainment, has optioned the Annie Jacobsen book Area 51: An Uncensored History of America?s Top Secret Military Base to develop as a TV series. Karl Gajdusek (Dead Like Me, the Nic Cage film Trespass, Oblivion) will script and act as showrunner.

Deadline [1] says the series will follow “two men working on the base who are thrust into danger when they uncover secrets that the government will protect at any cost.”

Jacobsen’s book is based on interviews with nineteen men who served at Area 51 and over fifty others with links to the operation. Whether the TV show that results from the book will really have any more ties to ‘reality’ than so many other film and TV projects linked to Area 51 remains to be seen.

This makes me wonder once more what happened to the feature film called Area 51, which Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli shot two years ago. It has gone in for reshoots, and Paramount is holding the project in a vault only a bit less secretive than those are the namesake military site. Given how enthusiastically Paramount promotes anything related to Peli’s Paranormal Activity franchise, and the way that his TV show The River (for which Peli is a producer) is being promoted, one would think that Paramount would be eager to start making money on the Area 51 film. Can it be that bad? Worse than Apollo 18?

Here’s a video interview with author Annie Jacobsen, and which also features an CIA-produced film about Area 51, produced in the ’50s.

Mondo Partners With DC Comics, First Poster Released Black Friday

Add another amazing license to Mondo’s growing list of conquests. The poster boutique of the Alamo Drafthouse has made official posters for Star Wars, Star Trek, Pixar, Disney, Jurassic Park and Wednesday they announced a partnership with DC Comics to start producing posters for films and comics. Yes, DC. As in Batman, Superman, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman.

The first poster, Fortress of Solitude, is by rising artist JC Richard (whose Jurassic Park poster [1] by Mondo might be their best yet) and will be released on Black Friday.

After the jump, check out the full image and speculate as to what a team up between Mondo and DC could mean for the future.

Here’s JC Richard’s Fortress of Solitude, inspired by Richard Donner’s Superman. Click on the link for the hi-res image.

[2]Fortress of Solitude is 12 x 32 in an edition of 390. It’ll cost $50 and go on sale at a random time Black Friday, November 25, by following @MondoNews [3].

As for the art itself, it’s definitely influenced by Dan McCarthy’s Hoth [4] print from 2010. That striking winter landscape, featuring an ever so tiny probe droid, is the definition of what I like to call “subtle fandom.” The same can be said for this poster. Someone who knows Superman will understand this image immediately. Anyone else would really have to look hard to figure out what it is. Then, they’ll see that small piece of Red and Blue flying through the sky and it’ll just click.

Clicking is what you’ll have to do a lot of to snag one of these bad boys on Friday.

Finally, Mondo having a license with DC opens a huge, huge bag of worms. Or should I say bats. Read this clip from the press release including by Mondo Creative director Justin Ishmael:
The DC Comics series, in partnership with Sideshow Collectibles, will encompass both comics and films as Mondo artists tackle some of the most iconic characters of all time.  ?We wanted to kick off the DC Comics series with an art print from arguably the most famous character ever, but in a unique way which focuses on the iconic Fortress of Solitude,? said Mondo?s Creative Director Justin Ishmael.
“Comics and films.” What major DC movie is scheduled for 2012? You know it. The Dark Knight Rises. Let the anticipation begin.

Read more about Mondo’s team up with DC in an interview with Ishmael over at Comic Book Resources [5].

Aaron Sorkin ?Strongly Considering? Sony?s Biopic of Late Pal Steve Jobs

[1]

About a month after we first reported [2] that Social Network and Moneyball screenwriter Aaron Sorkin was being courted to write Sony’s Steve Jobs biopic, the scribe has said that he is “strongly considering” taking the studio up on its offer. While that’s not exactly a confirmation that Sorkin will actually do the project, the fact that he’s talking publicly about it seems like a step in the right direction, right? More details after the jump.

Sorkin commented on the Jobs project during the recent P.S. Arts Express Yourself 2011 event in Santa Monica, California. “Sony has asked me to write the movie and it’s something I’m strongly considering,” he told E! [3] (via The Hollywood Reporter [4]). However, the scribe was careful to stress that he had not yet made a decision. “Right now I?m just in the thinking-about-it stages,” he said. “It?s a really big movie and it?s going to be a great movie no matter who writes it.”

Sony snapped up the rights [5] to Walter Isaacson’s biography Steve Jobs in a $1 million deal just days after the Apple co-founder’s passing on October 5. While the move may have appeared crass from an emotional perspective, it was definitely savvy from a business one: Isaacson’s book immediately jumped to the top of the bestseller lists upon its release a few weeks later, selling 379,000 copies in its first week. Based on dozens of interviews with the Apple co-founder as well as hundreds more with Jobs’ loved ones, competitors, and colleagues, Steve Jobs covers the late tech icon’s life from childhood all the way through to his legacy.

Sorkin seems like an unusually great pick to adapt Jobs’ tale for the big screen, and not just because he’s an Oscar-winning writer. The two were friends in real life, giving Sorkin the personal insight to pen what could be an unusually intimate portrait of Jobs. Then there’s also the fact that Jobs, on the surface, was so much like a quintessential Sorkin character — brilliant, driven, hard-working, and (not to speak ill of the dead, but) a bit difficult.

Discuss: Do you like Sorkin for the biopic? Also: Because THR apparently enjoys a good round of fantasy-casting as much as we do [6], the publication asked veteran casting director Sharon Bialy her picks for the lead. Bialy came back with Andrew Garfield, Shia LeBeouf, or Ashton Kutcher (?!!) to play Jobs in his younger years, and Keanu Reeves, Ralph Fiennes or Noah Wyle for the grown-up version. What do you think?

?The Darkest Hour? International Trailer and Featurette

I don’t know what to make of The Darkest Hour, the film that pits Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Mingella, Joel Kinnaman and Racheal Taylor against inter-dimensional aliens who seem to disintegrate earth-dwelling beings as the aliens try to steal Earth’s energy.

I love the idea of an original horror/sci-fi story that tries to create a pretty unique adversary. But what I’ve seen from the film so far hasn’t entirely sold me on this particular approach. Check out a new featurette below from the Singapore arm of 20th Century Fox, and also have a look at a ‘mood pie
